What Is Stretch Film?

Stretch Film is a polyethylene material known for its ability to stretch and cling or conform like elastic. It comes in wide continuous roles and can be applied by hand or machine. Here is a closer look at Stretch Film and its uses.

What Is Stretch Film Used For?

The ability to stretch and conform to objects of any shape makes Stretch Film perfect for shipping.  Boxes, bags, large loose goods, and most anything that is shipped on a pallet is wrapped with Stretch Film. The Stretch Film serves multiple purposes:

  • Bind Separate Items Tightly Together

  • Bind Items Tightly to a Pallet

  • Protect Goods From Tempering

  • Keep Goods From Shifting and Damage

  • Safer Handling of Palletized Loads

  • And More...

How Is Stretch Film Made?

Stretch Film is made in two basic ways that both use extrusion. The first manufacturing process is casting. Using a slot die, the resin is extruded into a sheet that moves over cooling rollers. This is a cost-effective, faster means of producing Stretch Film for general purpose use.

The second manufacturing process is known as blown. In this process, the resin is extruded through an annular die and allowed to cool by ambient air. Blown Stretch Film is known to have enhanced characteristics over the cast version. It is more expensive and time consuming to produce and therefore is more expensive than cast Stretch Film.

Stretch Film For Every Need

The design of this Stretch Film is specific to agricultural needs and incorporates an additive that makes it resistant to various atmospheric conditions and protects the agricultural products within.

Stretch Films are available in many grades and sizes for versatility. Hay Wrap for example is a Stretch Film that vastly improves the transport and storage of hay bales. Common twine or baling wire allows loose portions of the bale to fall away and does not protect the hay from rain or moisture. Hay Wrap covers more of the bail surface area, acts as a moisture barrier, and tightly contains the hay for later use. This saves ranchers money and gives them more efficient use of a consumable product.

What Sizes Does Stretch Wrap Come In?

Being a bulk industrial use product you will commonly find lengths in 1000’ to 1500’ roles. But it is the width that makes the difference according to your needs. The width can range from as little as 5” up to 22”. Obviously the wider the film the less time and effort it takes to properly wrap something. The most common width is 15”.

The most important consideration is the thickness. Stretch Wrap is measured in mils or microns and you will see it noted in gauges. The larger the gauge, the thicker the film. In general the thicker the film the more durable it is.
